HENRY SY - A Filipino-Chinese businessman, born on October 25, 1924 (85). Known as the "Philippines' king of retail". He earned his Associate of Arts Degree in Commercial Studies at Far Eastern University. He worked in his father's sari-sari store at Echague St. in Quiapo, Manila at at the age of 12. His life as a child circulate in their business, he doesn't even find time to play like other kid of his age would do. During the 2nd world war, while selling his goods, he was hit by a shrapnel and was brought by his friend to a hospital using a push cart. After the war, he ventured in a shoe selling business and made his friend that save his life as his business partner. This partnership lasted for 40 years until the time they have to give way for the renovation of the building that they lease. Still wanting to earn more, he opened the first air-conditioned shoe store which is the SM Shoemart that eventually succeeded after undergoing hardships and trials. This once struggling businessman now owns the well-known and established 33 SM Malls nationwide, Banco de Oro-Equitable PCI Bank, and has the majority of shares in China Bank. His networth? a whooping $5 Billion.
LUCIO TAN - A Prominent Filipino-Chinese businessman and the second richest man in the Philippines. Born on July 17, 1934, this 76 years old billionaire owns Fortune Tobacco which is the Philippines' largest cigarette maker, Asia Brewery, the second largest brewery in the country and Philippine Airlines, the country's flag carrier. Like Mr. Henry Sy, he also studied in FEU where he take up Chemical Engineering and obtained his Bachelors Degree at UST. Today his networh is $2.1 Billion.
JOHN GOKONGWEI JR. - Born on the August 11, 1926, this Filipino-Chinese businessman is the owner of the Cebu Pacific Air, Digitel Communications Philippines, Sun Cellular Network, Universal Robina Corporation, Robinson's Land which operates the Robinson's Malls and he is also the chairman of the JG SUMMIT. He is now ranked by Forbes.com as the countries 3rd most richest man with his networth of $ 1.5 Billion.
JAIME ZOBEL DE AYALA - now with the networth of $ 1.4Billion from $ 1.2 Billion last year, Mr. Jaime Zobel de Ayala was the last managing partner of the Ayala Group of Companies in 1967 the time when the company changed into a corporation. He succeeded his cousin Enrique Zobel as President and Chairman of Ayala Corporation from 1983 to 2005. It is his eldest son Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala who is the present chairman of the corporation and the President is his younger son Fernando Zobel de Ayala. In 2007 he tied with Mr. Henry Sy as the wealthiest Filipino but his conglomerate shares from Ayala Corporation drops which made him slipped to the 4th place.
ANDREW TAN - an entrepreneur who is engaged in liquor, fast food and real estate business, Mr. Andrew Tan is the 5th on the list. This poor immigrant from China moved to Manila and studied at University of the East. Due to financial reasons he sometimes prefer to go to school walking rather than riding a public transport. He now runs the Alliance Global Group Inc. which handles Megaworld, Emperador Distillers Inc., and Golden Arches Development Corporation that franchises Mc Donald's. Today his networth is $1.2 Billion.
