BIGGEST SMELLY FLOWER
Just recently it was heard on the news that a rare big flower bloomed in Japan after a gap of 20 years. It attracted thousands of visitors in Koishikawa Botanical Garden, Japan. This flower known as Amorphophallus titanium,Titan Arum, carrion flower, corpse flower or corpse plant of the family Araceae is native of Indonesia's Sumatra island were it is being called as bunga bangkai (bunga means flower and bangkai means corpse). It stands 5 feet tall at full bloom it emitted a pungent odor that is described as similar to a rotten meat or a raw garbage which reports says reaches 1/2 mile when the wind was right.. Its inflorescence can reach 3 meters in circumference and it has only a few days of flowering phase.

A distant related kind of flower which is the Rafflesia of family Vitaceae is a genus of parasitic flowering plant. It has approximately 27 species. Rafflesia is a big kind of pungent odor emitting flower that is usually found in Southeast Asia. It was the official state flower of Indonesia, also Sabah state in Malaysia and as well as the Surat Thani province in Thailand. Several species of this flower was found in the Philippines including the r. manillana and r.Banahawensis. It was first discovered at the rainforest of Indonesia in 1818 by an Indonesian guide who was working for Dr. Joseph Arnold and named it after Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles who was the leader of the expedition.

ReplyDeleteu know what , last time i remember in primary school Standard 4 when we have this Kajian Tempatan Subject , and there is a picture of Bunga Rafflesia, teacher said it was one of the biggest flower and i as a kid back then
